Collins Earns Top Quarter Horse Jockey Title
Harold Collins earned his first Hoosier Park leading jockey title for Quarter Horse racing during the 2009 meet at Hoosier Park. Collins, who finished second in 2008 to Juan Delgado, brought home 12 winners to earn the title. Julie Veltman, who was the leading Quarter Horse rider in 2005 and 2006, finished in second place with 11 wins.
Horses ridden by Collins earned more than $238,000 during the Hoosier Park Quarter Horse meet. A native of North Carolina, Collins has 27 career wins at Hoosier Park since Quarter Horse racing was introduced in 1997. He is currently ranked fifth on the list of all-time leading riders at the track.
Collins assists leading trainer Ron Raper at his farm in North Carolina during the winter months. He competes at tracks across the Midwest each year, pulling in leading jockey honors in 2009 at The Red Mile and Indiana Downs, where he has won the title the past two years. Collins was also awarded the top Quarter Horse rider in the state of Indiana in 2008.
Collins added several stakes wins to his credentials at Hoosier Park in 2009. He guided I Is It to victory in the inaugural running of the $75,000 Miss Roxie Little Futurity. Collins accepted his award on the final day of racing Saturday, Oct. 24 from Jeff Smith, general manager of racing.
