He also plays a big part in the barn tours given at Hoosier Park by opening his doors and allowing patrons to see the backside of horse racing.

During Community Hospital of Anderson Night Thursday, June 19, more than 300 visitors came through Shelton’s barn during the races. Shelton was present for some of the tours to give insight about driving and training Standardbreds.

“I think it’s important to be able to explain and show our business to racing fans,” said Shelton. “I enjoy having the groups come back and I’m always glad to help out when I can.”

Shelton, a native of Ohio, has been an active trainer and driver since the mid 1980’s. He competed at Scioto Downs and Lebanon Raceway before moving to the Indiana circuit full-time in 2004.

Shelton received a gift certificate to Applebee’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill, located on 53rd street in Anderson. Applebee’s has been a long-time sponsor of the weekly award.
