Gray Named Cracker Barrel Trainer of the Week
Steve Gray was honored as the Cracker Barrel Trainer of the Week Saturday, June 22. Gray had three wins in four starts during the five-day period to receive the award.
Gray trains EJ’s Copperstone, who is undefeated this season in four starts. The Indiana-sired filly has 11 wins overall. She will race in the $100,000 Indiana Sires Stakes Final for sophomore pacing fillies as part of a special Hoosier Cup Night program Saturday June 28, where combined purses exceed $1 million.
“We are looking forward to the final next week,” Gray said. “Hopefully, she (EJ’s Copperstone) can get her picture taken for the win. We will also have a trotting colt (Brandon’s Secret) in the Sires Stakes Final for the three-year-old trotters, so I hope we have a good night.”
Gray trains at a private training center located in Muncie, Ind. owned by L.J. Stone, a co-owner of EJ’s Copperstone with Phil Hawk. He is assisted by his wife, Julie, who co-owns Brandon’s Secret with Hawk. Brandon’s Secret has three seconds in four starts this year to make him a viable candidate in the final.
Rick Moore, general manager of racing, presented Gray with a gift certificate to Cracker Barrel, located on 59th street in Anderson near Scatterfield and I-69. One trainer each week is recognized for their achievements at the track.
